The mountain is known as Kailāśain Sanskrit.The word might be gotten from the word kēlāsa which signifies "crystal".In his Tibetan-English lexicon, Chandra distinguishes the section for 'kai la sha' (Wylie: kai la sha) which is a credit word from Sanskrit "kailāśa"


The Tibetan name for the mountain is Gangs Rin-po-che. Posses or Kang is the Tibetan word for snow top undifferentiated from high mountain or himal; rinpoche is a honorific signifying "valuable one" so the joined term can be interpreted "valuable gem of snows.

Tibetan Buddhists call it Kangri Rinpoche; 'Valuable Snow Mountain'. Bon writings have numerous names: Water's Flower, Mountain of Sea Water, Nine Stacked Swastika Mountain.
